The fees are determined by three factors: the distance, the weight class of the vehicle, the number of axles (with or without a trailer), the emission class, and a toll rate per kilometer, which includes infrastructure costs and the costs related to air pollution. In Austria, currently, all vehicles are subject to tolls on all highways and expressways. For trucks (vehicles > 3.5 tons), this toll is distance-based and is paid using On-Board Units (OBUs). Passenger cars (PKW) pay a flat rate in the form of a vignette, which is valid for either ten days, two months, or one year.

Generally, vignettes for passenger cars (PKW) can be purchased at LOGPAY acceptance points (gas stations). In Switzerland, currently, tolls are applicable for all highways and national roads (1st and 2nd class). For vehicles up to 3.5 tons, the toll is collected in the form of an annual vignette. All vehicles over 3.5 tons are required to pay a performance-based heavy vehicle fee (LSVA) for motor vehicles and trailers used in transport. In some cases, vehicles with a permissible total weight of over 3.5 tons are not obligated to pay a performance-based heavy vehicle fee. This is the case, for example, when the vehicles are not intended for the transportation of goods. Instead, they pay a flat-rate heavy vehicle fee (PSVA). One could say that the PSVA is the 'vignette for the big ones.'

In the United Kingdom, currently, only vehicles > 12 tons are subject to tolls on all highways, except for the 'M6 toll' in the West Midlands (near Birmingham), which is toll-based for all vehicles. Domestically registered vehicles pay the toll together with their vehicle excise duty (VED). Holders of foreign-registered vehicles weighing over 12 tons must note that the toll must be paid through the portal before arriving in the United Kingdom. In addition to road tolls for heavy vehicles, a city toll is also levied for all vehicles in London and Durham. Furthermore, some bridges and tunnels have tolls for all vehicles.

The Norwegian toll system is unique. There is no permanent toll; instead, new road construction projects are financed through a temporary toll on the respective road section. In other words, when the construction project is completed, a toll is imposed on that stretch of road. Once the costs have been covered, the road becomes toll-free. This system exists on both highways and other parts of the Norwegian road network, including bridges and tunnels, and applies to all motor vehicles except motorcycles and mopeds. For trucks, the use of an On-Board Unit (OBU) is mandatory to collect the toll, and for cars, video tolling is also possible.
